Clinical Courses

Critical Junctions in Internal Medicine

Overview

Critical Junctions is a unique project started in 2012, which focuses on preparing residents in different specializations for transitions they will experience at critical junctions in their internships. The project is a joint initiative of MSR and the Sheba Medical Center intended to catalyze a change in organizational culture. It creates a generic, simulation-based platform that prepares residents, with standardization and consistency, for the transition between stages of their residency.  Furthermore, it provides the residents with tools to better deal with the clinical and personal challenges that these transitions entail.

Until now the project has been offered for departments of pediatrics, gynecology, internal medicine, emergency medicine and general surgery. The first courses started in mid-2012 and since then dozens of courses have been offered with the participation of most of the residents in these fields.

The program’s success derives from the exceptional efforts invested by the program team and leaders within the departments (who operate the program in addition to their regular activities),  the support of the department heads and the close cooperation between MSR and the hospital. In the coming year the program will continue in the hospital and we hope to expand it to additional departments as well as departments in the rehabilitation hospital.

Internal Medicine

The field of internal medicine is highly diverse and demands of the medical and nursing staff extensive knowledge, a wide range of skills, and the ability to deliver treatment in complex and emergency situations. This specialized course was created to prepare young residents in internal medicine departments for the common challenges they will encounter during their residency.

Course Objectives

To help residents become better prepared for treating patients through practice in complex and commonly occurring scenarios that occur daily in internal medicine departments.

The course is intended to promote work according to standardized procedures based on established flow charts. Evaluations will include discussions based on the flow charts.

A team of medical trainees will include 6 interns practicing up to three months in an internal medicine residency.

Course Description

1/ Model – independent study of the theoretical materials
2/ Training day

  • The training will take place in a simulation of an internal medicine department, using respirators, simulators and actors. The participants will practice in stations and simulations that test their skills in routine and emergency medical situations.
  • The scenarios will be videotaped and the videos will form the basis upon which the participants will be evaluated by an experienced course leader.

Examples of Specialized Courses

  • Improving clinical and communication performance when treating asthma patients
  • Improving clinical and communication performance when treating diabetic patients
  • Managing treatment during respiratory and cardiac emergency situations
  • Treatment of patients on respirators
